We caught up with Jenny Aves, our Stockist of the Month for August. Read all about her three beautiful shops, nestled in the beautiful village of Mevagissey, Cornwall.
Tell us a little bit about your shops...
I have three shops which all cover a lot of bases! At Home focuses on luxury homewares; Big Sister is home to lifestyle goods such as skincare products, inspired gifts, and relaxed leisurewear; Little Sister caters for children up to the age of 6.
My shops house my soul. They are an integral part of me, and I love what I do. I'm so grateful to my incredible team for their unwavering support, and my customers who've been with me since the beginning, who've helped my business grow.
What do you love about being a shop owner?
Every person has a story to tell, and being a shop owner is a great way to form human connections in this digital age. I love catching up with our regular customers, as well as welcoming new customers to our stores. I also love providing in-person customer service - something that's missing with a lot of faceless organisations.
Have you ever had any famous faces pop in?
Yes! But I'm not going to tell you who. Every customer is important to me, and it's important that my customers are able to shop in comfort and privacy, no matter who they are.
Three words to describe your shop...
Friendly, inviting, soothing.
Tell us a little bit about the place you are located...
All of my shops are located in beautiful Mevagissey, an authentic working fishing village in Cornwall. Along with hard-working fishermen and fabulous boat trips that cater to all levels of excitement, Mevagissey is home to a Model Railway, which has just celebrated its 50th anniversary, many other gorgeous independent shops, and wonderful cafes such as She Sells on the harbour front where you struggle to choose between ice cream or crepes, and Olivia's Sandwich Hut for delicious takeaway picnics. Mevagissey is a stone's throw from the truly magical Lost Gardens of Heligan, a place of breathtaking natural beauty. There's so much more than is possible to mention, so please do come and experience it for yourselves!
Your favourite time of year in the shop?
It's impossible to choose, as I am fond of all four seasons, and the new collections and sense of progression that each season brings. Each month has something unique about it. I simply enjoy being in my shop, and in Mevagissey, no matter the time of year! It's a special place to be.
Your favourite moment in the shop?
It's lovely when people share their enjoyment of what we are doing with us. That always makes my heart glow as a shopkeeper. One of my favourite shop moments was when a beautifully behaved little boy drew me a picture of a seal while his parents shopped - I will always treasure it.
What first attracted you to Sophie Allport products?
Sophie's elegant illustrations, the diversity of her range, and the quality of her products. There is something for every single household, and every single person.
What is your favourite Sophie Allport collection?
I have a soft spot for the Hares collection. I adore the gentle, understated colours, and the softness of the design. It reminds me of the crisp country mornings of my childhood.
Finally, where can people find you?
People can find all three of my shops in Mevagissey, Cornwall (Little Sister: 6 Church Street, Mevagissey, PL26 6SP; Big Sister: 3A St George's Square, Mevagissey, PL26 6UB; At Home, 16 Fore Street, Mevagissey, PL26 6UQ).
