We caught up with the lovely team at Bury Lane Farm Shop, who are our Stockist of the Month for February! Read all about their family-run farm shop and what makes them special, from their food hall and gift hall to the garden shop filled with an abundance of flowers and plants.
Tell us a little bit about your farm shop...
We are an independent family-run Farm Shop near Royston on the South Cambridgeshire/North Hertfordshire border, about 15 miles south of Cambridge. We started in a small hut over 35 years ago and are now a thriving farm shop with a cafe, garden shop, gift hall and children's fun barn, unique to this area.
What do you love about being a shop owner?
Being in retail means every day is different and we take great pleasure in providing a friendly personal service knowing our customers leave the shop having had a great shopping experience.
Have you ever had any famous faces pop in?
We do occasionally see a recognisable face but we are too discreet to name names!
Three words to describe your shop?
Three words to describe the shop would be independent, friendly and welcoming.
What makes your shop unique?
We are the 'face' of a large commercial cut flower farm, and the shop sits near our main glasshouses filled with thousands of oriental lilies which we grow all year round. We also grow peonies, agapanthus and lilies in covered tunnels and on surrounding farmland plus asparagus and strawberries in early to mid-summer. These are all sold in the farm shop often the same day they are picked, you can't get fresher than that!
Your favourite time of year in the shop?
Our favourite time of year is predictably December. The atmosphere gets more and more festive as the month progresses until the peak of Christmas week when it is all hands on deck to provide our usual impeccable service. It's super busy behind the scenes with multiple deliveries every day, but we have a great team who pull together and work incredibly hard.
What first attracted you to Sophie Allport products?
We just love Sophie Allport designs for their traditional look but with a modern twist and the fabulous quality of the products that really shines through the colours, fabrics and packaging. It's easy to mix and match the designs.
What's your favourite Sophie Allport collection?
A personal favourite is the Bees collection although the Pheasants and Hares are always popular and the Dragonflies are really striking.
What can people expect when they come to visit your lovely farm shop?
We have a strong focus on British products and local suppliers where possible, and our Gift Hall has a wide range of goods from kitchenware through to children's toys and games. The Food Hall is always well stocked with a busy traditional butcher, fresh fish counter and a deli with approximately 30 British artisan cheeses. In addition to this, we have a Garden Shop with plant area and a fantastic children's indoor soft play farm-themed Fun Barn and summer outdoor Beach adventure zone!
Finally, where can people find you?
Bury Lane Farm Shop can be found alongside the A10, 15 miles south of Cambridge and 1 mile north of Royston on the South Cambs/North Herts border.
