About Spaniels

Spaniels are one of Britain's most popular breeds and here at Sophie Allport HQ, we've got numerous proud owners! We also often have these four-legged visitors in our shop on Stamford High Street.

Most people can name a few of the most common breeds, but did you know there are actually over twenty different types of spaniel? Here are our insights into the three that inspired Sophie's new collection...

SPRINGER SPANIEL

Intelligent and agile, Springers really are… springy! Originally bred to be gun dogs, Springer Spaniels are still commonly used as a working breed. They can often be spotted as police, military and mountain rescue sniffer or detective dogs.

They thrive when locating and retrieving, which combined with greater speed and strength than other spaniels makes them an asset to any dog unit.

COCKER SPANIEL

Smaller than springers, cocker spaniels are recognisable by their silky long ears. Just as intelligent, they too are alert and active. They could, however, be considered the calmer yet more dependent member of the Spaniel family.

Cheery and loyal, cockers are wonderful family pets and a firm favourite amongst the likes of the Beckhams, the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge and Oprah Winfrey.

Cocker spaniels

Adoring attention and giving bounds of affection, cocker spaniels are often used as assistance dogs - particularly hearing. They love to be challenged! In addition, their loyal nature makes them ideal to rely on.

CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL

Arguably one of the most recognisable breeds of dog, the Cavalier King Charles has a unique appearance with a muzzle rather than the flat face and more domed head of the King Charles breed. Dating back to the 16th Century, this particular breed was popular with King Charles II... so much so they're now named after him!

Due to their long hair, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel is prone to shedding and their coats require frequent maintenance.  However, they are charmingly good looking and have a truly majestic composure.
