Q&A with Felix Favor Parker

  1. Tell us a little bit about how you started Fairfax and Favor, what was the inspiration? Marcus and I were always keen to work for ourselves and originally started out selling leather gun slips and accessories. They were a beautiful product, but the gun slip market is quite niche and not a great chance of repeat custom. If we sold a gun slip it should last 100 years, and if it didn’t we had done a bad job. Where we were making the gun slips was in an area of Spain that also made shoes. We saw some shoes and decided to buy some and see what the reaction was. The shoes automatically sold better than the gun slips, so we began to focus more on this. Over the years the range has expanded to include handbags and accessories. These were at the request of our customers to have a bag that matched their boots. We are about to launch outerwear this month which we are really excited for.

  2. What makes your products unique? All of our products have been designed with the customer in mind. Particularly the men's products, they have usually been created out of the need for Marcus and I for a product. The Cadogan travel bag was created because my old travel bag had broken and the same with our washbags. If it is made from leather, we look to make one for ourselves! We are probably best known for our ladies Regina suede boots. They are really special and stand out as they offer a very flattering look combined with a memory foam comfort padded insole that makes them a very glamorous boot that can be worn day-to-day.
  3. What do you enjoy the most about what you do? I’m on the product and design side of the business, so I always enjoy seeing new prototypes coming in and then look forward to when they launch and seeing how they get on. We are also extremely proud of all the charity work we do and is without a doubt the most rewarding. This year we have donated 10% of our online sales in April to The NHS charities together and created limited edition products and raised 105k for them. We have just finished our Breast Cancer Now campaign and have sold tassels and boots and donated all our profits. We are incredibly proud to have raised over 125k for them this year.

  4. What is it like working alongside each other? Marcus and I work really well together. Since the beginning, we have split it so I look after the product development and supply and Marcus looks after sales and web. Very simply it is set up as supply and demand. This is great as we are both totally accountable to each other and have a very clear focus each day. It is great having a business partner as many entrepreneurs know it is often quite lonely and at times and incredibly daunting. Having a best mate to share the good and the bad times with makes it a lot more fun and a lot less terrifying when things go wrong!
  5. Describe Fairfax and Favor in three words… Social, Lifestyle, Community
  6. What are your favourite products? We wouldn’t be where we are without our hero products the Regina or Explorer, and so naturally, we are very fond of them! I really like our new Charlotte Puffa jackets that are about to launch, and I live in my trusty Trafalgar Chelsea boots.
